Fisheries and Aquaculture Environment and Conservation July 7, 2010
Input Being Sought On Coastal and Oceans Management Strategy The Provincial Government is seeking input into the development of a strategy for coastal and oceans management in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, today released a discussion paper for the consultations and encouraged feedback from key stakeholders and the public.

Summit on Fraser River Sockeye Salmon: Understanding Stock Declines and Prospects for the Future March 30-31, 2010 Edited by Patricia Gallaugher & Laurie Wood Continuing Studies in Science and Centre for Coastal Studies A scientists’ think tank met on December 7‐8, 2009 to consider the causes for the unexpectedly low returns for Fraser River sockeye salmon in 2009. They examined these questions: • Is marine/ocean survival the problem? • What other factors must be considered to develop a better understanding of marine and freshwater survival? • Do forecasts provide useful information to fisheries managers? • How can we improve monitoring and management in a changing world? • Where should research be focused?

Research across borders: Community-University Alliance Over the next five years the OMRN will be involved as a partner organization in a university and community research alliance (CURA) project entitled, “Coastal Communities Challenges in the Face of Climate Change”. The project will look at the challenges communities in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence currently face due to a rapidly changing climate. Please click here for more information.

21 October 2009 Ca commence! The OMRN Conference is just days away and we are looking forward eagerly to welcoming all who are attending as delegates. We would like to inform you about the special session organized for Saturday, October 24, last morning of the Conference, in which Peter Harrison has agreed to give us his view of “OMRN Futures”. At this session we will be presenting and discussing an OMRN Communications Strategy (developed by a team of University of Ottawa MBAs as part of their programs), as well as a White Paper on OMRN Futures.
