ODLS - Ocean Noise

(Presentation in English)

Summary

Sound in the oceans is generated by a variety of natural sources, including marine animals, as well as a variety of human-produced sources, including commercial ships. After a brief review of shipping noise characteristics and trends, this talk will highlight the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) as a case study for the development of tools to mitigate and monitor the impacts of noise from large commercial vessels on the marine environment. Since 2006, low frequency acoustic data have been collected throughout the SBNMS and used to address multiple questions regarding the distributions, behaviors and potentials for hearing loss and masking among sanctuary species. Results from this research will be discussed, and mitigation methods will be suggested for future policy and scientific pursuit.
Dr. Leila Hatch is the Regional Marine Bioacoustic Coordinator for Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) and the Northeast Region of NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary Program In her current position, Dr. Hatch focuses on characterizing the relative inputs of different source types to the total underwater noise budgets of local marine environments, and using this information to manage better acoustically-sensitive marine species.
