The 2009 OMRN National Conference Presents

‘The Transparent Ocean’Presented by Dr. Ron O’Dor

4th Canada Ocean Lecture

Please join the OMRN in welcoming this year’s Canada Ocean Lecture Series speaker, Dr. Ron O’Dor, Canadian Geographic’s 2009 Environmental Scientist of the Year & Senior Scientist at the Census of Marine Life, Dalhousie University.

Presentation Abstract
New technologies demonstrated by Census of Marine Life projects have transformed the ocean from dark and mysterious to transparent and understandable. The Ocean Tracking Network is one example that allows us to know when fish go where. Why subsidize fuel burning vessels to search the ocean for fish when we could subsidize the tagging of fish so that they tell where they can be caught cheaply and with minimum impact on their conservation and the environment.  Traditional knowledge about fish distributions will change dramatically with global warming creating the opportunity for a 'new order'.
