The OMRN is pleased to announce its support of the current project, Using Local Knowledge to Manage Coastal Environments: A Case Study in Change Islands, NL, funded by SSHRC, as well as the OMRN and CFOAM. The lead researchers include Dr. Derek Smith, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies,Carleton University, Dr. Kelly Vodden, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Memorial University and Dr. Maureen Woodrow, Executive Director of the OMRN and Adjunct Professor, Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa.

PROJECT SUMMARYUsing Local Knowledge to Manage Coastal Environments: A Case Study in Change Islands, NL
The residents of coastal communities are primary stakeholders in fisheries management but continue to have little input into what are currently top-down, and often ineffective management strategies. Local people have valuable knowledge to share about the marine environment and the problems with current practices and regulations.
