The Adaptive Co-Management (ACM) Working Group (WG) brings together those seeking to develop a new conceptual understanding of the institutions managing oceans, coasts and other natural resource situations, and factors influencing their effectiveness. Key concepts grouped under the heading of adaptive co-management include adaptive management (adapting to change), co-management (sharing management responsibilities) and resilience (ability of systems to withstand disturbance), as well as considerations relating to learning processes, creating social capital and institutional design. This WG explores the interaction amongst these, and draws lessons from a range of natural resource systems, whether marine or terrestrial, to improve management in the future. Finally, the ACM group is concerned with linking science and scientists with resource users, government managers and other actors in collaborative problem solving processes.
